A wave-shaped timber ceiling to fix an awkward space and stop you hearing the next table.
A new sushi brand right in the centre of Dehesa de Campoamor, next to a sports area with a gym and padel courts. The unit had been a restaurant before, but it badly needed updating: sloping ceilings with an odd shape, worn floors and a bar as old as my grandmother.
The first battle was the ceiling. It was an inverted ceiling that dropped lower as you walked in. Towards the two façades it felt spacious, but in the middle of the restaurant the low height was oppressive. We designed a timber suspended ceiling that undulates like waves and softens that change in height. Along the way, the timber fixed the acoustics: before, you could hear everything; now you can't hear the conversation at the next table.
We repeated the same timber pattern on the walls and added planted areas. The bar is a solid block clad in stone with ochre veining that merges with the chilled beer-tap area. On the floor, concrete for the walkways and wood-effect porcelain tiles for the dining area. That separates the spaces without building a single wall.
The kitchen was also planned down to the last detail so all the equipment fits into a very small space. But it isn't the most glamorous part to show off, so we'll save it for another time.
